Our District
Iowa's 1st Congressional District spans 20 counties in the southeastern region of the state, encompassing a diverse mix of urban centers, small towns, and rural communities. The district borders the Mississippi River, providing scenic beauty and serving as a key artery for trade and agriculture. The landscape includes rolling hills, river valleys, and fertile plains that support a rich tradition of farming and community life.
The district is a powerhouse of agriculture and manufacturing, anchored by family-owned farms and local industries that drive Iowa's economy. The region’s agricultural output includes corn, soybeans, pork, and eggs, produced by hardworking families whose operations often span generations. These farms form the backbone of the district and reinforce Iowa's status as a national leader in food and fuel production. The district also contributes significantly to biofuels, wind energy, and other renewable resources.
Lee County and Marion County stand out for their vibrant manufacturing sectors, which support local economies and provide thousands of high-quality jobs. From fabrication to advanced industrial production, manufacturing remains a cornerstone of the district’s economic strength.
Davenport and the greater Quad Cities area contribute significantly to the district’s identity, serving as a cultural, economic, and logistical hub. With historical roots as a riverfront commerce center, Davenport is also known for its music, arts, and community events that draw visitors from across the region.
Iowa City is a hub for literature, healthcare, and education. Named the first UNESCO City of Literature in the United States, it is home to the University of Iowa and renowned writers’ workshops. The city’s medical centers are among the most advanced in the region. Meanwhile, Indianola is known for its National Balloon Classic and a range of community events and parks that celebrate Iowa’s outdoor heritage.
The district is also home to a large and respected veteran population, with many communities deeply committed to honoring service and supporting those who wore the uniform. Its rural areas reflect Iowa’s enduring values of faith, family, freedom, and community pride.
From the cultural legacy of Iowa City and Davenport to the manufacturing strength of Pella and the agricultural roots stretching across 20 counties, Iowa’s 1st District captures the spirit and grit of the American heartland.
