Miller-Meeks Applauds President Trump for Protecting Nutrition Assistance During Democrat Shutdown
IOWA — Today, Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) applauded President Trump’s leadership in protecting critical nutrition assistance for families amid the ongoing Democrat-led government shutdown.
“President Trump once again stepped up to lead where Democrats failed,” said Miller-Meeks. “While Democrats shut down the government to push reckless spending and taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants, President Trump is protecting the more than 62,000 Iowans who rely on WIC. He’s standing up for American families while Democrats continue to put illegal immigrants ahead of them.”
The Trump Administration announced it would use available funds to ensure families who rely on WIC continue to receive support despite the shutdown. The move provides relief to low-income mothers and children who would otherwise face disruptions due to the Democrats’ refusal to support a bipartisan, bicameral funding bill that keeps the government open.
Background:
Miller-Meeks voted to pass the bipartisan, bicameral continuing resolution that fully funded the government for seven weeks without raising spending or adding partisan provisions. The bill passed the House with support from both parties, but Senate Democrats rejected it and forced a shutdown after demanding $1.5 trillion in new spending and taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants.
The Trump Administration’s announcement ensures families who rely on WIC continue receiving vital support despite Democrats’ refusal to act and protect families across the country.
