Miller-Meeks-Backed Bill to Lower Housing Costs and Restore the American Dream Passes House
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Mariannette Miller‑Meeks (IA‑01) voted to pass H.R. 5184, the Affordable HOMES Act, bipartisan legislation designed to reduce regulatory barriers, make manufactured housing more affordable, and help more Americans achieve the dream of homeownership. The bill passed the House floor as part of a continued effort to cut red tape and expand economic opportunity for working families.
“We need to make homeownership attainable again for Iowa families, not let costly federal mandates price them out of the market,” said Miller‑Meeks. “I voted to pass the Affordable HOMES Act because government overreach has made it harder to build and buy affordable homes. With this bill, we cut unnecessary red tape, boost supply, and help restore the American Dream for families across Iowa and the nation. We’ve now passed this commonsense housing reform as part of a broader push to lower costs and protect hardworking Americans.”
The Affordable HOMES Act:
- Eliminates duplicative federal mandates by rescinding Department of Energy energy efficiency standards for manufactured housing and restoring clear, consistent authority to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
- Removes regulatory conflict and delays that make it more expensive and time‑consuming to build affordable homes, especially manufactured homes which are a vital part of the national housing stock.
- Boosts supply and accessibility of manufactured housing by streamlining the standard‑setting process and reducing barriers that have driven up costs for homebuilders and buyers alike.
Background:
Manufactured homes provide an important, cost‑effective housing option for millions of Americans. More than 22 million people live in manufactured homes nationwide, yet conflicting federal mandates have made it harder to increase production and affordability.
Miller‑Meeks’ vote advances the House Republican commitment to cut wasteful government regulation, lower the cost of living for families, and restore opportunities for families striving to purchase their first home. As the bill moves to the Senate, she will continue advocating for policies that expand housing access, reduce costs, and strengthen communities across Iowa’s First District.
The passage of the Affordable HOMES Act adds to a broader effort to lower costs for working families in Iowa and across the nation, alongside historic tax cuts, healthcare affordability reforms, and infrastructure investments that support economic growth.
