Miller-Meeks, Hinson Demand Answers from Whirlpool CEO on Amana Layoffs
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) and Ashley Hinson (IA-02) sent a letter to Whirlpool Corporation CEO Marc Bitzer demanding answers following the company’s announcement that 341 workers at its Amana, Iowa facility will be laid off effective March 9, 2026.
In the letter, the Members called the decision “unacceptable in its impact and deeply troubling in its implications,” citing concerns that domestic manufacturing jobs may be shifting outside the United States at the same time Iowa workers are losing theirs.
The lawmakers wrote:
“These layoffs would hollow out a community and undermine the very domestic manufacturing base that American workers have spent decades building.”
They further noted public reports indicating Whirlpool has expanded manufacturing capacity in Mexico while announcing significant job cuts in Iowa.
Among the questions posed to Whirlpool, the Members asked whether any work currently performed in Amana will be shifted outside the United States and what support will be provided to displaced workers, including severance, continued health coverage, and retraining assistance.
The letter also emphasizes Congress’s recent efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing through Made in America policies and pro-manufacturing tax incentives designed to encourage companies to build, hire, and invest in the United States.
Reps. Miller-Meeks and Hinson have requested Whirlpool provide a written response to their questions by March 5, 2026.
