Education

Growing up, it was always my dream to become a teacher. I loved school and wanted to share my passion for learning with others. However, in the 10th grade, I suffered a severe burn in a kitchen fire and was hospitalized. During my time in the hospital, a physical therapist went out of her way to ensure my recovery, inspiring me to pursue a career in the medical field. Despite this, my love for learning never waned.
As a member of Congress, I have actively advocated for enhanced educational opportunities for all. I believe every American child deserves access to a quality education.
Here are some of the bills I’ve worked on to improve education:
- I introduced the Know Before You Owe Federal Student Loan Act, legislation that would require Institutes of Higher Education (IHEs) to counsel students before any federal loans are disbursed.
- I introduced the Securing Our Schools Act, legislation that would clarify that states have the flexibility to utilize unused State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to be made available for school security measures.
- I cosponsored the Educational Choice for Children Act, which would provide $10 billion in annual tax credits to incentivize education choice for K-12 students.
- I introduced the Supporting Children’s Mental Health Care Access Act, a bill to reauthorize funding for children’s mental and behavioral health programs. This bill would help address the children’s mental health care crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
