Iowa lawmakers anticipate and analyze ahead of Biden's Congressional address

April 28, 2021

DES MOINES, Iowa - (Iowa's News Now) — As more details about what President Biden will bring up during his first address to Congress Wednesday, Iowa legislators were already making predictions -- and proposals.

"I will be attending President Biden's Joint Address to Congress on Wednesday. I hope he will lay out actionable solutions to the many challenges facing Iowa families, farmers, and small businesses right now," Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson said in a statement Monday.

First and foremost, the President has to acknowledge the crisis at our Southern Border and explain his plan to secure it to keep Iowa families safe. He also must commit to reining in wasteful spending on policies Iowans don't want, and prioritizing the needs of our rural communities through real, physical infrastructure investment. The President should reverse course on the partisanship that has defined his first 100 days in office and chart a new path forward. I appreciate the opportunity to attend and look forward to hearing what he has to say.

Senator Joni Ernst (R - Iowa) also laid out her expectations and excitement, not for Biden's address, but for the GOP response to be delivered by Senator Tim Scott (R - South Carolina).

"I do anticipate his message will focus on the GOP and what we bring to Americans. And that is freedom and prosperity and economic growth and the exceptionalism of America," Senator Ernst said in a video posted to her Twitter.

Iowa Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks says she's looking forward to attending, hoping Biden's administration will "begin to have serious and meaningful discussions with Congressional Republicans to deliver real results to the American people as we continue to fight this pandemic."
