Politicians in Washington, D.C., used to talk a lot about “comprehensive immigration reform.” It was envisioned as a grand bargain providing a pathway to citizenship for people living here illegally, increasing border security, and modernizing guest worker programs.

Politicians don’t talk about that anymore. They are setting their expectations lower.

CLINTON — Mayor Scott Maddasion is optimistic about Clinton’s prospect for a RAISE grant to fund a road project after visiting with Iowa’s senators and congresswoman in Washington, D.C. this week.

“I’m extremely optimistic,” Maddasion said Thursday. Iowa’s members of Congress advocate for the entire state and don’t favor specific towns, Maddasion said, but he thinks Clinton has a shot at winning the RAISE grant this year.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to spreading awareness of the most diagnosed form of cancer in women.

It is estimated that over 300,000 cases of both invasive and noninvasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women this year. Currently, there are more than 3.8 million women in the United States who are battling or have battled breast cancer at some point in their lives.

Wednesday, Ranking Member of the Livestock & Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee Dusty Johnson (R-S.D) and Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28) introduced the bipartisan Cattle Contract Library Act of 2021 (H.R. 5609), which would create a library for cattle contracts within the USDA’s Agriculture Marketing Service.

This week Ranking Member of the Livestock & Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee Dusty Johnson (R-S.D) and Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28) introduced the bipartisan Cattle Contract Library Act of 2021 (H.R. 5609), which would create a library for cattle contracts within the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Agriculture Marketing Service Department. Currently, cattlemen are unaware of contract terms being offered by packers, leading to a decline in leverage for smaller producers during price negotiations.

VINTON--Rylie Plughaupt of Vinton was honored to accompany her grandfather Dale Speidel, 99 of Vinton this week on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Speidel was the oldest veteran to join the group. Members met with Senator Charles Grassley and Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks upon arrival.

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa,) an Army veteran, welcoming dozens of Iowa’s veterans who served in World War II, Vietnam, and Korea to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. recently. This is the second time the Congresswoman has welcomed an Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to D.C. Senator and Mrs. Grassley were also in attendance.
