Laken Riley Act Passes House, Headed to President Trump’s Desk
Washington, D.C. – The Laken Riley Act, championed by Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), has passedthe House and is now on its way to President Trump’s desk for final approval. This critical bipartisan legislation ensures that illegal aliens charged or convicted of theft, like the individual responsible for Laken Riley’s tragic death, will be detained to prevent further harm. The bill also incorporates Sarah’s Law, requiring U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal aliens convicted of or charged with killing or severely injuring an American citizen.
"Laken Riley and Sarah Root should still be here today," said Rep. Miller-Meeks. "Illegal aliens, like the ones who took their lives, have no business in this country. This bill ensures they are held accountable and kept off our streets, never to hurt another American. Under President Trump’s leadership, law and order is being restored, and we are putting American safety first. I look forward to seeing this bill signed into law to protect our families and secure our nation."
Background:
H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, was first passed by the House on January 7th, with 159 Democrats voting against it. After facing delays in the Senate, the bill was amended to include key provisions like Sarah’s Law, which enhances protections for Americans and strengthens accountability for illegal aliens committing violent crimes.
The bill now heads to President Trump's desk where it will be signed into law.
