Miller-Meeks Calls on President to Sign Bipartisan Bill to Lower Housing Costs after Cancellation
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) today called on President Trump to sign the historic, bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act into law following the cancellation of today's signing ceremony.
Statement from Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks:
"Iowa families are being squeezed by rising housing costs, and too many young people are losing faith that they will ever be able to buy a home of their own. Yesterday, I voted for the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act to lower costs, increase housing supply, and prevent Wall Street from cornering the market. I respectfully urge the President to sign it into law.
I also strongly support the SAVE Act, but housing affordability is an important priority to me. This bipartisan bill has passed both the House and Senate and should be signed into law immediately."
Background:
Last night, the House of Representatives passed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act by a vote of 358-32, making it one of the most bipartisan pieces of legislation in years.
Congresswoman Miller-Meeks has been a consistent champion of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act throughout the legislative process.
Here is what the bill delivers for Iowa families:
- Lowers housing costs by removing unnecessary regulatory barriers, allowing pre-approved home designs so builders can get permits faster, and giving communities more flexibility to produce affordable homes.
- Builds more homes by modernizing HUD programs, updating manufactured housing rules, strengthening the HOME Program, and converting vacant buildings into attainable housing.
- Prevents Wall Street from buying Iowa homes, ensuring large institutional investors cannot compete against everyday Iowans in the housing market.
- Empowers community and rural banks by cutting red tape and expanding local lenders' ability to finance new home construction for Iowa families, farmers, and small businesses.
- Protects Iowa veterans by improving access to VA home loan benefits and ensuring veterans' disability compensation does not count against their housing eligibility.
- Preserves affordable rural housing for 400,000 rural families whose housing is tied to maturing USDA mortgages.
