Miller-Meeks Introduces Resolution Designating February 1 as “Blue Star Mother’s Day”

June 4, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), a 24-year Army veteran, has introduced a resolution supporting the designation of February 1 as “Blue Star Mother’s Day” to honor the contributions and sacrifices of Blue Star Mothers across the United States.

Blue Star Mothers of America was founded on February 1, 1942, by mothers of service members serving in the Armed Forces. For more than eight decades, Blue Star Mothers have supported military families, cared for veterans, assisted wounded warriors, honored fallen heroes, and provided unwavering support to those serving our nation.

“As a veteran, the wife of a veteran, and the daughter of a veteran, I know military service is never borne by the service member alone,” said Congresswoman Miller-Meeks. “Behind every man and woman in uniform is a family that serves and sacrifices alongside them. Blue Star Mothers have spent generations supporting our troops, caring for veterans, and strengthening military families. They deserve our gratitude and recognition.”

"For more than 84 years, Blue Star Mothers of America has stood beside military families, offering support, understanding, and a community built on shared sacrifice and service. The designation of February 1 as National Blue Star Mother's Day would provide meaningful recognition to the mothers and families who serve alongside their loved ones in uniform. As National President, I am honored to represent thousands of Blue Star Mothers across the nation who understand both the pride and the challenges that come with supporting America's service members. We are grateful to see the legacy that began with our first meeting on February 1, 1942, recognized in a way that honors military families past, present, and future." - Karen Stillwell, Blue Star Mothers of America National President

Being the mother of two military sons has been the greatest source of joy, privilege and pride of my life. The life of a Blue Star Mother comes with its own unique challenges and emotions that many will never experience or understand. I appreciate that Congresswoman Miller-Meeks recognizes our roles as Blue Star Mothers and the support we provide to our military service members, our nation’s veterans and especially our Gold Star Mothers & families that have lost so much because of the sacrifices their children made on our behalf." - Lisa Wilson, Blue Star Mothers of America - Iowa Chapter President

"For 250 years, American mothers have contributed to the freedom and success of our country by raising the brave heroes who have defended it. We know the sacrifices and risks that may come when our sons and daughters join the military, but the pride and love we have for them and for our nation outweigh those worries and strengthen our resolve to always stand with them in support. Iowa has always been a leader in military service—from more than 50% of our fighting-age sons volunteering to serve during the Civil War, to Red Oak, Iowa, enduring the highest per-capita loss of any American town during World War II, to the deployment of more than 1,800 Iowa National Guard members and hundreds of Iowa Reserve soldiers this past year. We have also endured the devastating loss of four Iowa sons in attacks in Kuwait and Syria. I am so grateful to Iowa Congresswoman Miller-Meeks for recognizing Blue Star Mothers across the country for our unwavering commitment to supporting our military, our veterans, and our Gold Star families, and for recognizing the important role we play in the success of our children in uniform." - April Conway, Blue Star Mothers of America - Iowa Chapter Vice President

The resolution recognizes the contributions of Blue Star Mothers of America and encourages Americans to observe “Blue Star Mother’s Day” and support the organization’s work in communities across the country.

“Blue Star Mothers represent the very best of America—service, sacrifice, patriotism, and love of country,” Miller-Meeks continued. “This resolution ensures their legacy is honored and that future generations understand the vital role they play in supporting those who defend our freedoms.”
