Miller-Meeks Joins Bipartisan Effort Urging the White House to Keep Promise to Afghan Partners

June 4, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C.Today, June 4th, 2021, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-02), a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel, joined the bipartisan Keeping Our Promises Working Group in a letter to President Joseph Biden. The members called on the White House to direct the United States government to evacuate the Afghans who have served as partners to the United States.

In the letter, the members wrote: “After examining this situation through multiple hearings, briefings, and our own offices’ research and outreach, our bipartisan working group has concluded that we must evacuate our Afghan friends and allies immediately. No U.S. entity—to include the Department of Defense, Department of State, USAID, et al.—has the ability or authority to protect them in Afghanistan after our withdrawal. It would be a moral failure to transfer the responsibility to protect our Afghan partners onto the shoulders of the Afghan Government. The time is now to honor our promise and evacuate Afghan SIV applicants.”

In addition to Miller-Meeks, the following members signed the letter: Reps. Don Bacon (NE-02), Earl Blumenauer (OR-03),Joe Courtney (CT-02), Jason Crow (CO-06), Neal Dunn (FL-02), Bill Foster (IL-11), Ruben Gallego (AZ-07), Jared Golden (ME-02), Andrew Kim (NJ-03), Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), Sara Jacobs (CA-53), Tom Malinowski (NJ-07), Peter Meijer (MI-03), Seth Moulton (MA-06), Stephanie Murphy (FL-07), Adam Schiff (CA-28), Michael Waltz (FL-06), Peter Welch (VT-At-Large), Brad Wenstrup (OH-02), and Del. Michael San Nicolas (GU-At Large).
