Miller-Meeks Leads Bipartisan Effort to Increase Transparency in Fertilizer Markets
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) is leading bipartisan legislation to bring greater transparency and accountability to fertilizer markets, delivering long-overdue answers for American farmers facing rising input costs.
"Iowa farmers are the backbone of our economy, and they deserve transparency and fairness when it comes to the prices they pay," said Rep. Miller-Meeks. "For too long, skyrocketing fertilizer costs have strained producers without clear explanations. This legislation will shine a light on the market and ensure farmers have the information they need to compete and succeed."
“The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) appreciates Representative Miller-Meeks for supporting Iowa corn grower needs and demanding transparency in the fertilizer industry,” said Iowa Corn Growers Association President Mark Mueller, who farms in Waverly, Iowa. “Farmers are price takers, not price makers, and we are tired of being taken advantage of when it comes time to purchase our farm inputs each year. This legislation will bring fairness and transparency to the fertilizer industry; a vital tool corn growers need to produce their crop.”
Fertilizer prices have remained volatile in recent years, placing significant financial pressure on producers across Iowa and the country. Despite changes in global supply chains, a lack of transparency has made it difficult for farmers to understand price increases or plan ahead.
The legislation would require regular reporting and analysis of fertilizer pricing and supply, helping identify potential market distortions and ensuring greater accountability across the supply chain.
"As input costs rise, farmers are left with fewer tools to manage risk and protect their bottom line," Miller-Meeks continued. "This is about restoring trust, increasing transparency, and making sure our producers are not left in the dark."
This legislation is the House companion to a bill introduced by Senators Chuck Grassley and John Thune.
Joining Miller-Meeks in leading the House version are Representatives Dusty Johnson (R-SD), Nikki Budzinski (D-IL), Ashley Hinson (R-IA), Angie Craig (D-MN), Randy Feenstra (R-IA), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Zach Nunn (R-IA), Sharice Davids (D-KS), and Brad Finstad (R-MN).
"I’m proud to work with my colleagues in both chambers on this commonsense, bipartisan solution," said Miller-Meeks. "We must continue advancing policies that support our farmers, strengthen rural America, and keep U.S. agriculture competitive."
