Miller-Meeks Urges DOJ to Continue Investigation Into Beef Industry

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, May 17th, 2021, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-02) joined several of her colleagues in a letter urging Attorney General Merrick Garland to continue the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into the nation’s four biggest meatpackers. The bicameral letter, led by Sen. John Thune (R-SD) and Rep. Dusty Johnson (SD-At Large), also requested that DOJ provide Congress with updates on its investigation and encouraged ongoing vigilance on this issue.

“It is critically important that producers have fair and transparent markets for the commodities they produce,” the members of Congress wrote. “We urge the DOJ Antitrust Division to continue vigilance and where possible, provide updates of findings.”

The letter was also signed by Sens. John Barrasso (R-WY), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Steve Daines (R-MT), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Hoeven (R-ND), and Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Reps. Kelly Armstrong (ND-At Large), Liz Cheney (WY-At Large), Randy Feenstra (IA-04), Ashley Hinson (IA-01), and Matt Rosendale (MT-At Large).
