Miller-Meeks Votes to Advance Constitutional Amendment Requiring Balanced Federal Budget

March 18, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) voted in favor of H.J. Res. 139, a constitutional amendment requiring the federal government to balance its budget.

"For too long, Washington has spent taxpayer money it doesn’t have, racking up trillions in debt and passing the burden on to our children and grandchildren," Said Miller-Meeks. "It’s time for Congress to do what every Iowa family already does, live within its means."

The Balanced Budget Amendment would require the federal government to align spending with revenue, restoring fiscal discipline and helping rein in out-of-control deficits that fuel inflation and weaken America’s long-term economic stability.

"Our national debt is over $39 trillion and growing," Miller-Meeks continued. "That kind of reckless spending drives inflation, raises interest rates, and makes it harder for families to afford everyday necessities."

Miller-Meeks emphasized that this amendment is about accountability and long-term responsibility.

"I’m fighting to restore common sense in Washington, protect taxpayers, and ensure future generations aren’t saddled with the consequences of today’s overspending," said Miller-Meeks.

The resolution now moves forward in the constitutional amendment process.
