Miller-Meeks Votes to Pass Transformational Housing Affordability Legislation

May 20, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) today voted on the House passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, bipartisan legislation aimed at lowering housing costs, expanding the housing supply, and helping restore the American Dream of homeownership for working families.

“For too many Iowa families, the dream of owning a home has felt increasingly out of reach because of years of rising costs, inflation, restrictive regulations, and a lack of available housing,” said Congresswoman Miller-Meeks. “This legislation takes meaningful action to cut unnecessary red tape, increase housing supply, lowe rent, and make it easier for working families to achieve homeownership.”

Miller-Meeks has been a leading voice in Congress calling for action to address the growing housing affordability crisis, including efforts to stop large Wall Street investment firms from buying up single-family homes and pricing young families out of Iowa communities.

“Iowa homes belong to Iowa families, not massive corporate investment firms,” Miller-Meeks continued. “This bill helps bring common sense back to housing policy by encouraging more construction, reducing burdensome regulations, and helping expand affordable housing opportunities across our communities.”

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act includes provisions designed to:

  • Reduce burdensome federal regulations that increase housing costs;
  • Expand housing supply and affordability;
  • Encourage new home construction and development;
  • Support workforce and rural housing initiatives;
  • Increase access to homeownership for working and middle-class families;
  • Address institutional investment practices impacting housing markets.

“Housing affordability impacts every generation, from young families buying their first home to seniors looking to downsize,” Miller-Meeks said. “Today’s House passage is an important step toward restoring the American Dream and ensuring more Americans have the opportunity to rent or own a home, build equity, and invest in their future.”
