NEW YORK, NY – In case you missed it, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, members of the Homeland Security Committee visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, honored the memory of the victims, and thanked first responders for their dedicated service. The Committee also held a roundtable discussion on cooperation between the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and local first responders since the 9/11 attacks.

There has been a recent nationwide uptick in Veteran Crisis Line referrals, said Rob Otto, a veteran and suicide prevention coordinator in the Iowa City VA Health Care System.

This weekend is the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks that led to the deaths of 2,996 Americans.

September 11th, 2001, started as a beautiful fall day in Iowa. My medical office in Ottumwa, Iowa, was less than five minutes away from my residence. I was on my way to the office shortly before 8 am Central Time. Listening to the radio, I heard the commentators mentioning a plane flying into one of the towers of the World Trade Center.

Having served in the U.S. Army for 24-years as a nurse and doctor, I have personally seen both the physical and mental wounds that veterans endure in service to our nation. Many veterans are still living with those scars, and without proper care and treatment, mental health crises can make everyday life a struggle or even life-threatening.
