Miller-Meeks: Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts, Seniors Get a $6,000 Social Security Tax Deduction
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) is highlighting a major win for Iowa seniors following the passage of the Working Families Tax Cuts, which deliver a historic $6,000 Social Security tax deduction for seniors and $12,000 for married couples filing jointly.
The new deduction provides meaningful tax relief for seniors who have spent a lifetime working and paying into Social Security, ensuring they can keep more of the benefits they earned. For the vast majority of seniors, this deduction will significantly reduce, or effectively eliminate, federal income taxes on Social Security benefits.
“Iowa seniors earned their Social Security through decades of hard work,” Miller-Meeks said. “They deserve peace of mind in retirement, not higher tax burdens. This $6,000 Social Security tax deduction delivers real relief and helps seniors keep more of what they earned.”
Miller-Meeks recently met with seniors and families in Pella to discuss the new deduction and other provisions included in the Working Families Tax Cuts. The conversation focused on how this tax relief will help seniors living on fixed incomes better manage rising costs and plan for the future with greater financial security.
Under the Working Families Tax Cuts:
- Seniors age 65 and older may claim a $6,000 individual Social Security tax deduction.
- Married couples filing jointly may claim a $12,000 deduction.
- The deduction works alongside existing tax benefits, resulting in 88 percent of seniors paying no federal income tax on Social Security benefits.
For many seniors, the additional savings can help cover everyday expenses such as groceries, prescription drugs, utilities, and other essential costs.
“After paying into the system for decades, seniors should not be taxed again on the benefits they rely on,” Miller-Meeks said. “This deduction reflects a commonsense approach, rewarding work, protecting retirement security, and respecting seniors.”
Lowering costs and delivering tax relief for Iowa families remains a top priority for Miller-Meeks. She continues to advocate for policies that strengthen Social Security, protect seniors, and ensure hardworking Americans can retire with dignity and confidence.
