WASHINGTON — A bill headed to President Joe Biden's desk contains earmarked funding to study highways in the Oskaloosa area.

The $850,000 requested by Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Ottumwa, was included in the $1.5 trillion appropriations bill. It was passed in bipartisan fashion by the U.S. House on Wednesday, and the U.S. Senate 68-31 late Thursday. Iowa's Republican Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst both voted to pass the legislation, as did Miller-Meeks.

But there might be one image that always stands out when folks think of Iowa: acres upon acres of corn, soybeans, and livestock.

Three of the Iowans who serve in the U.S. House are touting items in the spending bill that will keep the federal government running through the end of September.

“We’ve got a lot in there that’s really great for Iowa,” said Congresswoman Cindy Axne, a Democrat from West Des Moines.

Axne said more than $10 million is included for projects in her third congressional district, including $1 million for expansion of the Stanton Child Resource Center and more than $3 million to repair storage tanks at the Des Moines Airport.
