WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, introduced the Preserving Employment Visas Act. This legislation would allow the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to preserve unused employment-based visas for use in Fiscal Years 2020 and 2021 (FY20 and FY21).

This legislation is the House companion to S. 2828, introduced by Senator Thom Tillis, R-NC, in September.

As a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, I believe it is critically important to address the unsustainable humanitarian crisis unfolding at our southern border.

According to recent reports, the situation at our southern border remains critical, with apprehensions at the southern border surpassing 200,000 in the month of August alone. Along with over 1 million apprehensions nationwide, CBP agents have seized nearly 600,000 lbs. of illegal drugs—including 10,469 lbs. of fentanyl—enough to kill every person in the State of Iowa.

Davenport and Muscatine will receive millions in federal grant dollars for flood fighting efforts, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced Thursday.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo, in news release, said the federal government will award $13.1 million in grants to help the two river communities recover from flooding in 2019.

“These ... investments will enable Iowa, hard hit by recent flooding, to shore up protection in several communities, creating resiliency in the face of future disasters," Raimondo said in a statement.
